Transformer on a dimmer

I have a mono rail track light that came with a 1000va 120v to 12v ac magnetic transformer. The owner wants the lights on a dimmer. Can I put a dimmer switch on the line side of this transformer?

Yes but you have to use a LV dimmer. Lutron makes them-- one is electronic LV dimmer and the other is a magnetic LV dimmer. They are expensive but you are lucky because the magnetic dimmers cost less.
