I have 480/277 primary feed. I was needing to step down to 120/240 for residential home. I figure a 50 kva would do. My question is do i need 3 phase primary or single phase primary transformer or will it matter?
 
If you are supplying power to a single phase transformer, you only need two of the three phases available.
Curious, is this a test question or actual job. It is highly unusual for an actual job.

How did you come up with the 50 kva?

I agree with Gus, it is very unusual for a residence to be supplied from a 480/277 volt service with a step down transformer.

Where is this project?

This is a Church project. We built a new fellowship building, So with the big air conditioner units we went with. 480/277 for the units and lights. Anyway there is a 200.00 minimum charge on the 480. So the pastors house is right next door so I wanted to step down and send the 120/240 to his house and I would then meet the minimum. And I was told that 50kva xfmr would be good for 200 amp service. Would it matter if the primary on xfmr was 3 phase or single phase?
