I had thought about getting a new Astro cargo van to save on fuel.
Come to find out they don't make them any more. They have been replaced with something called an HHR panel van. It doesn't even look like a work vehichle. Any body use one?

I checked ford they have a small van coming called the Ford Transit Connect.
It looks spacious. It's tall inside, too. 2.0 or 3.0 engines.
I'm looking to save on fuel cost.

I have never heard of the Transit Connect, but I am really happy with my
E250. When is it supposed to be out?

Right here.
The Ford Transit looks like an AMC Gremlin that grew up. It might get popular, but who knows? It's certainly quite popular in the UK. There's a couple flower shops around here using the HHR as a work truck, but it sure doesn't look like one.

The transit Connect is suppose to be in the US by 09.
It's a 4 cylinder good on gas. Bins and ladder racks fit in or on well.

With gas prices the way they are, and likely to stay that way, I think you are going to be seeing a lot more compact vans around.

I don't think full sized trucks are going to disappear completely, but my guess is they will be rendered to commercial/need usage.
