Re: travellers

I say don't count it. We know that both travelers can not be current carrying at the same time, so why would we count them both?

In a linear MWBC we do not count the neutral because it doesn't add to the total current in the raceway so why add this dead conductor?

all 10 of those conductors in that 1" raceway do carry the circuit current.
 When? How can more than six at a time have current?

Re: travellers

Ok now I am confused 4 sets of travellers are we switching one light or two :D If one then 2 travellers at a time a hot a neutral and a switch leg,if switched and fed from same location that equals 5 current carring conductors If 2 lights and one is switched and fed from one location and the other is fed and switched from other location that equals 7 unless on seperate circuits then 8 don`t share a neutral

Re: travellers

Allenwayne,

I'm using very specific language in my hypothetical. </font>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">1" raceway</font>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">4 sets of travellers</font>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">One hot conductor</font>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">One neutral conductor</font>
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Note the absence of switch legs, and the absence of the wire that connects the commons of two threeways (Aside -- I don't know what the name of this common-to-common conductor is, but it definitely isn't a traveller).

My hypothetical is for basic threeway set ups, and it doesn't matter how the switches are fed or which end has the fixture, or if there are 4ways involved. . .

The question is, do I have more than nine or less than ten conductors in the raceway?

Do I, by the NEC, have to derate to 50% or 70%?

Re: travellers

I tried to express this last time.
If those conductors are meant and intended to carry current, whether it is intermittent or non-coincidental, they are still considered current carrying conductors, because they all carry the circuit current. The code says current carrying conductors. It doesn't say anything about when and how often they carry current.
The code is very specific when it comes to counting the neutral. (I didn't mention that last time)
The code is also very specific on which ungrounded conductors to count and when. Nothing mentioned about travellers.

Roger and Physis, thank you for pointing out what I missed.

Re: travellers

If you were running the circuit conductors in a raceway for the 220V Air Cond for a sun room, and also the 220V Heater for that same sun room, would you count all 4 wires or would you only count 2? (lets just say they are controlled by the same t-stat with a HEAT and a COOL switch, neither would be on at the same time)

Re: travellers

Steve, I say count the conductors of only one of these loads, after all, in this scenario the NEC recognizes that only one of these circuits need be considered when calculating service size.

Re: travellers

I don't disagree with you Roger but what do think about liability. Little kid playing with matches, the fire marshall and the lawyer find the conduit (even though the conductors are still intact :D )

Re: travellers

This is where you and I get paid as expert witnesses to debunk their foolish conclusions.

Re: travellers

Scratch that last statement.

I should have said...
As Physis eluded to... When the Fire marshall, the lawyer AND (this is what I added) the Insurance company....

Re: travellers

OK Sam, I admit I should have said "this is where some would be paid :D
