Tricks keep insulation off non ic cans

In a house I was working on a few years ago, the original electrician used insulation board to make a box instead of the chicken wire idea. The box was duct taped at the corners to keep cold air from the attic out of the rest of the house.

Access to the fixtures from above totally changes the picture.
We have a contractor that uses insulation board and builds a box around the fixtures.
He uses construction adhesive and foil tape to hold it together. He's a bit paranoid and does this to cans that are IC rated too if he figures they are to close to the roof line and might cause a frost line.
