I ran about 400' of 2-2-2-4 URD from a house to a barn for two 20-amp circuits. Only the part coming out of the ground was sleeved with PVC.

Same with this 350' run:

Standard in WA to direct bury URD(USE) but it's not usually used upstream of the main disconnect as the power company pulls there own wire in here. I would expect to see it used in a pedestal type service to a house where the customer wants the meter near the property line. It's also used for subpanels in out buildings. I've had bad luck pulling it in conduit. Not my choice. Your milage may vary but I saw one monkey pull a service off the wall while pulling it. Bout a 125' run with two 90's in 2". 4/0 4/0 2/0.

You don't HAVE to put it in conduit but rocky soil may cause premature failure. When putting the service in conduit, we don't actually "pull" the cable if we can help it. We just slide the pvc down the cable as we are putting the cable in the the trench.

Is THAT what that brown stuff is? Soil?

'Round here, all we have is red clay!
Georgia red clay here. Ever seen "My Cousin Vinnie?" I have about 18" of top soil at my house then it turns into a sandy loam mix (yellow-ish to light orange). It is sticky: you can knock it off of a shovel but it will clog up a post hole digger.

At my mother's, below the top soil, it is dark orange/red and you have to scrape it off the shovel. Forget a post hole digger.

We direct bury URD triplex and quad around here all the time, it has to be buried 24 inches deep and then sleeved in schedule 80 pvc or ridged pipe when exiting the ground. It is also used in risors for overhead services, alot of electricians frown on using aluminum conductors for the service, but its becoming more popular with the price of copper being so high.....
