When scrolling through this interesting discussion I was just wondering when does the voltage drop due to length should be calculated.

Generally, and this is very general. Voltage drop is not much of a consideration until the CIRCUIT LENGTH is 100 feet. That means a distance from the power source of 50 feet. That is very general and depends on the total amperage of the circuit, but it is a rule of thumb that usually works.
