I have hit a gray area I have a 800 amp panel I am installing in a resturant. There was no thought to the electrical in the begining . What I have is 2 4" LB's turned to come through the wall hit a trough and then sit the 8' panel can on top to feed. Will the size of the can on the floor interfer with the 3' clearence wall or is it from the base of the panel can? It is 2 parallel feeds of 500mcm copper in 4" runs. Thanks

Tough to figure out what you are saying, but if it doesn't extend more than "6" you are OK. 110.26(A)(3)

This of course is if I'm understanding you correctly.

Not sure if I understand you're installation. Is the panel mounted above the trough or along side of it? What's the width of the panel? What size trough? How deep is the panel?

I had to bring the 2 - 4" up above grade to LB's to hit the bottom of the panel can. If I nipple trough the wall to hit the can I do not believe I will not have enough radius to hit the breaker. If I set a can will the width of the can cause my working clearence be off. If I understand the code will it be 24' can or trough.

panel is 96 high by 8.5 deep square d I Line 800amp main bottom feed
Trough size I do not know tahts were I was looking for the help. If i set the panel on a trough how does that inmact my clearence . I guess what I'm getting at I want to sit the panel on the trough to make enough room for the wire to enter the bottom of the trough and exit the top wich is the bootom of the panel can. legal or not and what size ????

If you set the panel on top then check my previous post for allowable depth. 6" Past the front so you have 8.5+6=14.5" deep trough. Most likely a 12x12 trough. You still need 30" or the width of the equip for clearance.IIRC.

If there is reason for concern about the depth of the trough and the depth of the panel, install the panel so the depth of the trough is not more than 6" more than the panel.

BINGO. Nowhere does it say you have to mount the panel flat against the wall. Make a 'strut rack to get it off the wall as you need.

I generally require panels to be mounted off the wall with 'strut, but only the depth of the 'strut. But that's just a preference. Anybody else do that?

I frequently do that. In a lot of places I have been in, they wind up with a roof leak and the water runs down the wall til it gets to panel. Then you sometimes wind up with a bit of fireworks.:D

Good point, but if the trough were mounted on the side of the panel than the 6" rule would not apply as long as you maintained the 30" wide space in front of the panel.
