I removed the branch circuit already, but this thing is unreal.

By the way, the sjo cord goes all the way to the well cap.

BTW, not having done a home well pump I have to ask. Is that even the right size conductor?

Those conductors seem a bit small for a motor load at 120 or 240 volts some distance away.

I dont know the pump size, but yeah, I've never seen anyone run SJO cord under ground either.

You can go 130' at 120volts with a 1/3 HP pump using #14awg

The terminals may be marked brown red yellow, thank the lord that the electrons do not know the difference.:D

Luckily, all that mess is getting updated... but just have to wonder who did that install, electrician or well guy?

I've seen some scary wiring done by well companies. Thankfully some of the better ones use UF cable instead of the pump cable for the run between the house and the well head inside of the black pipe. And some even upsize it to #10 if the run is very long.

That sounds like a violation since once you strip the outer jacket off its not really UF anymore?

I have a franklin book that I use to determine the branch circuit size, average pump for me to see is a 1/2 HP, 240 volts, which is allowed 650' at 12 AWG.
#10 AWG is good for 1020'

I'm not sure about that to be honest. I've used UF myself to repair a botched up installation where they ran the pump cable through the black pipe and spliced it a bunch of times in the well head. (the splices fell right apart.) I'm 99.999% sure that UF cable contains THWN conductors. I can't really think of any other solution than UF cable when they run the black pipe for the "raceway."

Oh, I know the feeling, the well guys around here always run well wire inside the spare water line then jamb a piece of carflex inside of that to the disconnect, I only supply power to the switch.
