Any one like to guess at about how many pounds of tugger strenght needed. I am being asked to look at a job last contractor failed. Thay used a portable bolt to the floor tugger they say 10,000 lb ,looked like a 6,000 to me. Removing and reinstalling new 350kmil wire (3) in 5in rigid steel conduit. Not sure of wire type in there now but it is rated for at least the 8320v it was carring. It leaves a man hole goes thru 3 90degree bends up about 30ft total lenght of 200ft. These wires have been in this conduit since 1968.Any guesses? john

got a chain come along and a i beam overhead. had to remove 400 ft of 13800 hv cable few years back. puller no 3/4 ton van no chain come along and 16 in structal i beam (roof) it budged and drove it out with a 1 ton van with proper pulleys and shives not safe by any means(the truck) but a poco guy (on day off )had this this and it took forever and then BANG the cable shot out a foot lot of tension kinda dangerous not good to get close to this stuff was in the ground from 1964 ? 63 in ma.

the reason why the last contractor failed to pull those conductors out of the conduit is because it was installed in 1968 and the pipe is probably corroded to a point where it doesnt exist anymore :) if a tugger cant pull out those cables then i would run a new pipe

Pre-flood the conduits with a mixture of wire lube and water weeks in advance of the pull. Anchor the tugger beyond what you think is necessary I have also seen tuggers in series, rope through one to the next one.

I have snapped a 1in rope so a super tugger anchored properly should do it without a problem. I think they can handle about 5 tons. Just make sure you are getting a good straight pull out of the pipe and keep your hands clear.

thats a good trick

about 4 years ago we had to pull 325 ft of 750 that had bin in the ground about 35 years my greenlee tugger would not pull it so we riged up two sets of pully in block and tackel style and the tugger did not even work hard we all so ran water in the conduit till it was full job complete

Last year, while inspecting a large job, the contractor contacted me about a similar situation. They had tried 3 different times with different methods to remove a large run of conductors that ran about 900 ft...through how many 90s no one knows. The run was under the entire length of the building, so digging it up was not a consideration.

They called me, to ask me if I would like to witness the final method they were going to try.
They had a bunch of shackles and other items...and... a large track bulldozer.

There first attempt only succeeded in destroying the setup and busting up the concrete the anchors were set in. (sometimes it amazes me how strong Conductors can be)
The second attempt was amazing, as the bulldozer struggled and finally the cable run let loose. That was a lot of copper once it was all pulled out.
