Turning a duplex into single residence. Service requirements.

I am working on a duplex that will be getting remodeled into a single family home. It currently has a separate service for each portion. When it turns into a single home will it be required to consolidate to one service?
 
I would say, yes, the NEC would require 1 service. But also as a practical matter I would think one would want that as most POCOs have base charges for each service that would that would inflate the overall electric bill significantly.
 
It's possible it is a 400amp service with two 200amp panels in different locations. So one meter, two services

One meter would be one service.

The only issue you may have is that if you currently have two service panels in two different locations, when you go to a single service, you will either need a main service disconnect or have two service disconnects grouped with each other.
If you are on the 2020 or 2023 codes, you will need an outside emergency disconnect per 230.85.
 
Because of the base charges, I'd think making one a sub-panel from the other would be a 'simple' solution.
If it is a 400 A service with two 200 A panels, aren't they already combined??
 
Revisiting this question because contractor is moving forward with the remodel.

So currently I think we have only one meter, but it's a 320A meter base with two feeds(service conductors) to separate locations within the duplex.

Would it be OK to keep things just as they are, with two 200A panels in the house?
 
As don mentioned, if you are under the 2020 or later Code you likely will need to address 230.85.
Under earlier Codes, 230.72 would be a potential issue.
In that you are dealing with existing structures, a call to your AHJ is warranted.
