Hello All...Leo here...I am studying for my test btu have not yet passed. I currently do basic installs for A/V equip.

Here is my question..
I have HO that would like a TV mounter in her bathroom at the tub. I have looked up code, and also the thread here about the best way to do it...
http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=81602

But the wall the HO wants the TV installed contains a large window...She would like me to cover the lower hlf of the window with Drywall...flush it out, and mount the tv in that lower sections. Kind of like using the lower half of the window sill as part of the box for a in wall mount. I have no Q's about placement of the recepiticle outside of the foot of the tub and not above it..and I plan on sercuring the box fram to the iinside of the window frame and using plexi as a barrier between the tv screen and the tub area...

Now I know I personally would not like this set-up, and there is no need to watch tv whiel taking a bath...but it is what the HO is asking me to do. Any suggestions on doing this? I hopw I am being clear. My basic brainstorming goes like this...blockthe window portion being covered by the tv box in the sill with some kind of backing so form the outside your not looking at the tv and wires and to prevent a lot fo direct heat/sunlight to bake the electrical stuff....then I will secure a top 2x4 "stud" for the top section of the box. thus giving me four solid walls /frame to wrk within. I will then route the power and cable wires thru the wall from the closest outlet and patch and paint it up once done. for the box I will built a face plate made of drywall )or should I use a stronger material?) with a plexi square insert lined up with the TV screen...after that I will connect the tv/cable wires, slide the tv into the box, w/screen facing plexi, and hing the top frame for easy access?

I wish I could draw what I'm talking about here...any sideline input/help would be great...thanks!
The HO does not wish to remove and install a smaller window, and she wante the space above the tv box to be window...I could also put some read bars beind tv in case box gets bumped it wont put pressure on the wondow at all.

Leo, the electrician your working under should be able to help you.

If you not working under the direct supervision of an electrician we really can't help you install a line voltage outlet in a bathroom.

I wire...thanks for your prompt reply.

To answer your question...I would consider myself mainly AV...since that is the majority of what I have been contracted to do. I do not yet have my license, but did state in my initial post that I am studying to take the test soon. My goal is to break into full on contract work...but until I get my license, and insured....most replies I get for electrical work have been A/V install questions.

The licensed electrician I have been mentoring under did give his two cents...but he is the one who directed me to this forum for further feedback.

I apologize if my initial post was confusing...I know this is mainly an electrical specific forum...but I dont need guidance installing a line voltage outlet in a bathroom...that is pretty simple stuff to me by now..and any uncertianties I may have, I have my mentor to consult. We are really here wondering if anyone has experience, thoughts on, and/or constructive feedback regarding making the full window a half window thr use of support studs and drywall..and converting the lower half into a mounting bracket for a TV...

I read the TOU prior to registering...I appreciate the legal and other needs for such terms. Hence the reason why I stated I was not asking questions specifically about how to wire it..(that I know how to do), but more of fellow electricians, contractors, handymen, ect...who may or may not have run into such a request as this and if not...to just think about the feasability or lack there of and help us out a bit.

I do hope to hear back soon, and until then...thanks for running a great looking and resourceful site!

I am confused. You want framing/drywall advice?

That might sound like a sarcastic question, it's not intended in that vein. I'm asking what you want to know, because I'm not clear on that - there doesn't seem to be an electrical/safety question in your posts.

I do have to say thank you, for giving me a chance to see this post - I howled when I saw that comment. :D

George,

thanks for asking more in the attempt to assist me. TO answer your question...yes...I am asking a framing/drywall question in a electrial forum. Yes, I aso realize the problem with doing so.
However, it was intentional. I figured my chances of finding a electrician who may have done a related install thus giving them some knowledge of options on how to accomplish what I was hoping to do for this HO would be better than if I were to seek out framing/drywall specialist who had experience with an odd location of an electrical device.
My main concern is installing this safely. Safety is needed due to the electricity involved, especiall being located above a bathtub. Thus here I am. I am not saying I did not also post this question to a farming and drywall forum as well. I am just going where my mentor suggested I post. From the looks of the link I posted which I too found to have some very amusing replies...I am not alone and thus this forum might be able to provide me what I need...It just may be your notthe electrician who happened to have some experience with wiring a similiar job?!?! I hope this helps more than just stirs the mud...

Stickboy: Your comment would fit in well with the other postings on the link I provided. very similiar sense of humor. Now as to if somewhere...underneath it all...you were referring to me as a caveman....well then no worries, I am already over it! =)

Leo, just my 2 cents here, if your not a carpenter, have the HO hire one, your a A/V installer. And then hire a licensed electrician for that receptacle for your equipment....

So easy even a caveman can do it...;)

"What's a GFCI?"

I am curious.
The cord for the TV is most likely 6 ft long. Where is the TV going to be installed in relation to the receptacle? Does this mean the cord will be passed along the wall-through the tub enclosure out to the receptacle? I do not see that as a good install. Or are you installing the cord through the wall (within the wall)??
You say this is "simple"...maybe not so simple...especially when you become more experienced and learn of all the pitfalls - such as a customer sueing you for an inadequate installation, then you find out that since you are not licensed, you are not even covered to make this installation...AH, YES - SO SIMPLE.

Obviously, the receptacle should be in the same cavity as the TV itself.
