I'm getting ready to install a Surge Arrestor that is panel mounted to a split bus panel. I have not done this before so I would like to get the opinions of those here. Do I connect the leads at the ML, service entrance, or can they be attached at any point in the panel and protect the entire system?

Theoretically, at any point, since everything in a service is in parallel, even with multiple panels.

Performance does depend to a degree on the impedance of everything between the source of the surge, the source of the feed to the electronics to be protected, and the supression equipment.

The best place is in the panel as close as possible to the electronics to be protected, typically via a separate 2-pole breaker.

A TVSS and Surge Arrestor are two different devices. See Section 280 and 285 for specific requirements.

Sorry about that. I have a Square D Mod# SDSA1175 Surge Supressor.

I will look closer at 280.
Thanks
