I use the wedge grip for my service bails. A little bit more expensive, but foolproof and more easily adjustable.

Sling vs Preform

Sling vs Preform

phone company still uses those around here, I think the power company has changed to the coils because they are probley less expensive and easier to to take apart and re-use.

I don't think so. 20 yrs ago when I worked for the POCO we used both. The preforms are a pain to put on, miserable to take off and usually not re-usable because they get deformed taking them off. The wedge slings (I forget the brand name) are a breeze to use and re-use. I don't know how the prices compare today.

the lineman that I deal with seem to take them on and off without too much trouble, they just stick a screwdriver under the tip of the wire and unwrapped it, I have used the wedge type before, they install really easy, but I know a few times I have tried to reuse some old ones, it was a real hastle beating them apart.
