I am building a 400 amp 120 -240 residential service. I am using a two gang meter base with 400 amp main lugs.Am going out of the back of the meter base to two 200 amp disconnects. My power company will not let us ground out of the meter base. What is the correct way to ground these disconnects?

Re: two gang meter pack

I am confused. You say you are using a 2 gang base but I don't think one exists. I think you are talking about a 320 ampere meter main. If that is the case, you can ground out of the side where the 400 ampere service disconnecting means is located. The electric utility is just prohibiting you from grounding from the meter enclosure portion. :D

Re: two gang meter pack

In that case, you may connect the grounding electrode conductor to the grounded conductor anywhere from the load end of the service drop or service lateral to the service disconnecting means, you may also connect to any service enclosure or service raceway. :D

Re: two gang meter pack

So just were would they like you to ground at? They must share a common ground.I did this just last week, como 2 meter sockets with bypass handles and 2 disconnects 1 on left 1 on right .ground rods to main that sits between the 2 sockets. What else can you do ?

Re: two gang meter pack

It sounds like you have a two socket meter base being served by one service lateral. The sockets then serves 2 separate disconnect switches, presumably going to each side of a duplex possibly. It is my opinion that you have one serive that needs grounding so you would ground out of you first disconnecting means to a grounding system (2 ground rods?), than an isolated ground system (4 wire) from the disconnect to the load center.

Re: two gang meter pack

You are correct. This is one service drop with two 200 amp meter sockets. The two 200 amp disconnects are feed out the back of the two gang meters. The disconnects are on the wall beside each other. I was confused if you grounded out of both disconnects to the ground rods or just ground out of one. Also what size grounding conducter should i use.
