I know it's okay on a blue box.
But,I never put two wires in one hole of the gray single gang nail up boxes.
I hired a new guy. He had done about 30 boxes like this before I caught it.

Ussually if we have three coming up from the bottom . Will bring one around to the top.
Is the gray box approoved for two wires in one hole?

Probably not approved but I have not met an inspector in our area that will turn it down. I usually don't do it- I have on a few occassions.

Now, in Durham, who knows.:)

I only have my 2005 code book in front of me right now, but doesn't 314.17(C) - Exception, specifically say you can do this on a 1g box?

You just have to staple it within 8" instead of within 12".

That is for fastening the nm cable. The OP is asking how many cables are allowed to go thru the openings provided in the box.

Mark we have been on the '08 for a few years now.

Thanks, I thought maybe it would be in the manufactors instructions. I was unable to find it.

I was just wondering if I should have him do them over or not.
Thanks Again

Ha Ha! Yeah, I had left my '08 out in the truck.

I do remember being called on this somewhere around here before, though, after doubling up cables in holes for years. You may be right on your Durham theory.

Buck, if you are in Raleigh / Cary / Wake County, I'm pretty sure you are OK.

If you have 3 NM cables coming into a single gang you might also want to double check your box fill, those things fill up fast.
