Type of Megger

When megging large motors 75 hp and 100 hp and up is a certain type of megger needed? We have an old 500 and 1000v crank type also we just got an fluke 1587 i used on small motors so far. Will the 1587 be able to do the job ?
If not can someone make a recommandition on the correct type? Thanks for the help.

Depends on the voltage rating of the motor, besides that you will need to hand crank for 10 minutes to calculate your PI and that gets old real quick. So if the voltages work the 1587 should be able to handle the small motors, you start getting into bigger motors in the MV class and you will need a better megger. I use a fluke 1520. It goes up to a 1000v. You do need to know the motor voltage cause you have to be able to stress the windings. I have used this megger up to 300 hp so far and works well. I dont know what you know about megging but just cause it meggs fine does not necessarily mean it is. if it meggs out bad it is. I use it most for tracking motors. I megg the motor new in good condition and record the info along with other factors like motor temp, ambient air temp, and moisture if its outside and raining. Try to duplicate test conditions every time. Any good motor shop should have more info and are always glad to help.
