2002 NEC allows TC to be ran outside of a cable tray at an unspecified length.
( if it is marked "suitable for open Wiring").If I take a cable out of panel and strap it to a ceiling , is it safe to say I can take it where I need to without a tray?
Also is TC cable ,same marking allowed to run down the hall way above a suspended ceiling?
Also,is it allowed to pentrate a 1hour wall?
Thanks guys.

Tray Cable Ran In Conduit

Tray Cable Ran In Conduit

What Does The Code Say About Running Tray Cable Intirely In Conduit? I Can See Where It Comes Out Of A Tray And Goes Directly In To A Short Run Of Conduit To Get To Equipment. But We Have A Electrical Contractor That Pulls T.c.in Conduit Instead Of Thhn Single Conductor. This Makes For A Diffical Time If I Need To Pull Some Extra Wiring In The Same Conduit. Since We Use Both A Union And A Non-union Contractor On Plant Site, I Feel That This Is The Non-union Contractors Way Of Charging More Labor To Make Up What Difference Between His Lower Costs And The Much Higher Union Job Costs. Our Plant Supplies Most Of The Material.

It says it's legal, see 336.10(3)

Whenever you go back and add conductors to a conduit do you derate the existing conductors?

You need to specify the type "TC-ER" cable. Absolutely love it! You can drop out of a horizontal cable tray into the top of a MCC, panel, etc. without conduit. Ditto for the final connection to a motor etc without having to use flex.

Support Issues

Support Issues

TC-ER is a great cost saver as long as it is installed according to Article 336. I had to inspect an installation last year where the contractor took very liberal guidance in 336.10(7), and did not support the cable per it's listing, and every 6' as specified. 500mcm 3-cond TC-ER weighs six pounds per foot. After six months of arguing, the unproperly supported cable started to pull/twist buss plugs from the buss causing some serious downtime form the plant, and major cost to the contractor to re-install it properly. TC-ER is great to use as long as installed properly. I have a few pic's but they are too large to post.
