UBC 310.2.2 / Recessed Lights in Fire Rated Ceiling

If I'm putting recessed lights in the first floor of a two story single family home, do I need to maintain a 1 hour fire rating around each fixture (i.e., build a drywall box or buy outrageously expensive fixtures?)

Does anyone have access to the UBC or a state code that adopts the UBC? Could you please post section 310.2.2?

Does anyone know if this section only applies to multi unit dwellings?

If it's a single family home, you do not need to build a fire box around the can lights, unless the cans are located in the garage. I'm not basing this on any particular knowledge of the UBC but rather my experience working in San Francisco. In a multi-family dwelling if the ceiling adjoins another unit then you have to build boxes around the cans.

Ike is correct. the only place in a single family home that is rated is the lid of the garage if there is living space above it and the wall between the garage and the house.
