Any reason a person can't bury UF for waterers in same ditch with water lines? Water lines to feed horse waterers only need power in winter to keep water from freezing. I can't find code that won't allow it. Maybe I'm thinking of communication and power.

It's listed for direct burial so I can't imagine why it would not be allowed. I don't know of any restrictions.. If it bothers you too much, your wire has to 24" w/o conduit, so through a couple layers of dirt in before the water line. Either way, you should be fine. One advantage of the layers of dirt between is you some sort of separation if the water line has to be dug up and a shovel has less chance of catching your wire.

Sure could tell you were from the South. Water lines are buried a mimimum of 3' and up to 6' to keep them from freezing around this neck of the plains.

If you go 3-6' someplaces around here you won't need to pipe any water in, just a filter and a pump.

Edit: BTW, that's just too cold. Unless I've got a free weekend and a set of skis, I don't want it that cold.

In the late 50's dad and I put the water line 6 and half feet so it wouldn't freeze, The next summer we re dug it to 8 ft it hadn't got cold enough since then to drive the frost that deep. Southern Colorado if you were wondering.

Keep the UF and water line about 6 inches apart so you have room to work on if they need to be repaired. Backfill with nice clean sand, so when you dig you will know when you are close, will also protect from rocks and such.

Also use the "Caution Electric Line Buried Below" tape. Last thing you want if you have to dig up the water line is to have the backhoe operator tear up the wiring too!

Yep, & I could care less what else goes in the ditch...
I have already revised where I had the meter planned if I noticed a nice fat ditch already dug for something else. I'm shameless like that.
