UF Wiring Practice

I would like some thoughts on type UF wiring practices.
If it comes out of the side of a residence for an exterior GFCI protected 120 circuit, is it necessary to place it in conduit prior to its entry into the soil? The NEC seems vague.
The wire is typically stapled to the wall and unprotected inside a garage.
Thus what is the difference if it passes to the external side of the wall, where it is attached in the same fashion, prior to going underground?

I think that almost all would agree that exposed UF at or near ground level is "exposed to physical damage". Yes, the code is necessarily vague on what exactly constitutes "exposed to physical damage". When in doubt, protect it, or ask your inspector. Different jurisdictions often have more rules that add some clarity to the physical protection matter.

How come Grass Trimmer instantly pops into my mind the second I read this post?. Alot of the people I see using them around town look like they are from places where there is no electricity, and how can we expect them to know not to cut into a little bitty cable running into the ground next to the rose bush?

Here is some "vague" code to consider!

300.4 Protection Against Physical Damage.
Where subject to physical damage, conductors shall be adequately protected.

300.5(D)(1) Emerging from Grade. Direct-buried conductors and enclosures emerging from grade shall be protected by enclosures or raceways extending from the minimum cover distance required by 300.5(A) below grade to a point at least 2.5 m (8 ft) above finished grade. In no case shall the protection be required to exceed 450 mm (18 in.) below finished grade.
