Lightning can hit any system.

My family and I lived at 1000ft above MSL. There was a 275kV OH line a mile from our house going through a gap in the hills.

Junior and I would sit in the window and watch the firework display! The wind tunnelled through the gap could lift the lines enough to cause a flashover. 275kV lines are usually duplex, it was that caused the wind lift so single lines were installed.

We still had the lightning, there’s naff all could be done about that.

The bottom line is the system would be back and working in minutes.

Admittedly the local 1500kVA going up in smoke was an inconvenience and the generator was called in to use.

What caused the 1,500kva to go up in smoke?
