UL Cable & Cord Designations

Hi All,

I have a really nitty gritty standards question on cable Types/Designations. Looking at the NEC, Section 310, it refers to cables using multiletter codes (e.g. XHHW) that are explained in the UL White Book, and UL Wire and Cable marking Guide, neither one of which is a formal UL Standard.

Does anyone know if these code letters are defined in any approved standard (UL, IEEE, NEMA, ICEA, etc.) or is this just a nomenclature developed over the years informally and only documented in the UL Guides?

Thanks,

Bohdan Dackow, PE

The White Book listing for the individual types of wires and cables gives the ANSI/UL number for the applicable standard.
The PDF is the easiest to search.

If you want the actual standard -- bring money!
