UL listed "dimmable receptacles"

Lutron Electronics has a UL listed half and full duplex receptacle that may be controlled by a dimmer switch (see their application note # 109). It is defined as a "special purpose connector" because it comes as a receptacle with a rejector-pin paired with a special plug with a receiver socket. What is the relevant NEC section that permits this application. It goes without saying that NEC 404.14 (E)allows dimmer switches ONLY on permanent luminaires or lighting fixtures.

No it does not go without saying, you are forgetting the last words of 404.14(E) :)

Part of 404.14(E)
....unless listed for the control of other loads and installed accordingly.

Re: UL listed "dimmable receptacles"

This is a good example of how 90.4 should be used.

A new product on the market, that is not directly addressed by the NEC. The product has a UL Listing and has installation instructions as to how it should be installed. The AHJ can now use this information along with 110.3(B) to make a somewhat informed decision as to its installation.

Re: UL listed "dimmable receptacles"

Thanks for excellent responses!

Both would seem relevant and hinge on the AHJ (90.4) as well as the specifics of the UL listing of the product. That Lutron App. Note # 109 clarifies the issue somewhat regarding the Lutron DFDU and HFDU products:

"...These receptacles provide a solution for
dimming portable lamps directly through a receptacle in both residential and commercial applications.
They are UL listed to be controlled by only specific Lutron dimmers..."

and

"...The list of UL certified dimmers compatible
with the DFDU, HFDU, and RP-FDU can be found in the product spec submittal form and instruction
sheets..."

The product submittal sheets mentioned above are available through the Lutron Technical Information website under the "dimmers and accesories" heading.
