Unbelievable E-bay listing

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

Unfortunately I don't think it violates any of Ebay's rules so they probably won't remove it. The same as being able to sell guns and nuclear warheads... just wish people used a little more common sense.
Maybe one of us should "sell" instructions to do it correctly for free and put him out of business. I would just be worried about liability

Edit to add: In his defence the ad states:
IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT THE MAIN BREAKER BE PLACED IN THE OFF POSITION BEFORE CONNECTING A GENERATOR TO THE HOUSE CIRCUITS.

(Of course there's a picture of a generator with cord attached showing exposed 30A dryer plug... oops)

Regardless of the main breakers position the set up is still an NEC violation.

Also as davedottcom pointed out there are still many homes with split bus panels, they do not have a main to turn off.

702.6 Transfer Equipment.
Transfer equipment shall be suitable for the intended use and designed and installed so as to prevent the inadvertent interconnection of normal and alternate sources of supply in any operation of the transfer equipment. Transfer equipment and electric power production systems installed to permit operation in parallel with the normal source shall meet the requirements of Article 705.

Transfer equipment, located on the load side of branch circuit protection, shall be permitted to contain supplementary overcurrent protection having an interrupting rating sufficient for the available fault current that the generator can deliver. The supplementary overcurrent protection devices shall be part of a listed transfer equipment.

Transfer equipment shall be required for all standby systems subject to the provisions of this article and for which an electric-utility supply is either the normal or standby source.
406.6 Attachment Plugs.
All attachment plugs and cord connectors shall be listed for the purpose and marked with the manufacturer?s name or identification and voltage and ampere ratings.

(B) Attachment plugs shall be installed so that their prongs, blades, or pins are not energized unless inserted into an energized receptacle. No receptacle shall be installed so as to require an energized attachment plug as its source of supply.

I would not cite this in his defense, as though it could in any way mitigate his culpability. Rather, it is an attempt on his part to create a defense against the lawsuits that may be coming his way. I see that not as admirable trait, but rather as reprehensible behavior. He appears to know that this is dangerous, but is willing to make money on it anyway, satisfied that he has provided an adequate warning of the dangers. If I were on a jury, I would recommend keelhauling. But you don't get to pick your jury assignments in this country, do you?

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

For all to many people a screw driver has too many moving parts never mind giving them an energized cord cap to plug in when there is a load present Can`t you see this happening

Used Panel
This is obviously a joke auction:
. Don't spend your hard earned money on new, untested equipment, buy used and know that this panel has stood the test of time. Note the beautifully antiqued condition of the bus bars, you can't buy a panel like this at Home Depot! This panel is Romex Racer tested
Romex Racer is a moderator on another electrical forum....and the STARTING price is a grand - LMAO.
I'm guessing this is RR's response to the "suicide cord" auction.

Think I could sell a bucket of steam for $100 there?

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

If you click on "See Seller's other items" you'll see the plot sickens.
He sells "Advice" on why you don't need a pilot's license to fly an ultra-lite!
Unfortunately, the U.S. Bill of Rights protects idiots like this. :( He could sell ideas on "how to kill children" if he wanted to, but he's not breaking any laws. Sad but true.
Democracy is not perfect...it's the best form of Government there is, but the freedoms it offers also allows the low-lifes to abuse the system.

Has anyone clicked on "Contact Seller" and sent him a link to this page?!?!

I'm sure he would enjoy chatting with us!

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

Seller's return policy:
Return Policy Details: If this panel isn't everything I've said it is, I'll sell you another one!

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

Here is the text of what I sent to eBay after reporting the item for encouraging illegal activity:

Please be advised that item number 6027049811 appears to be a set of instructions that violate a number of Electrical and safety codes. Merely including a written disclaimer should not make this an allowable listing. You can confirm this by showing the listing to any local certified electrical inspector, and/or your local electrical utility company. Don't just take my word for it, CALL YOUR ELECTRIC COMPANY, AND A LOCAL ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR AND ASK THEM FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL OPINION. Be sure to point out the picture in the listing that shows the generator cord back-feeding into a dryer receptacle outlet. Thank you for your prompt consideration on this matter.

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

this thread has confused the joke by road runner with the very serious issue about illegal way to wire a generator.

the latter makes me mad, but I dont know what I could do.

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

Update: The eBay listing has ended. Here is the new listing from the same seller

Maybe we should buy one, and then post NEGATIVE feedback telling the public directly that those instructions are hazardous? Then dispute the payment with PayPal and get our money back?

He currently has 100% positive feedback.

That would constitute fraud on the part of anyone who followed your suggestion.

If you want to leave negative feedback, you have to buy the item. If you want to avoid being a fraud, then you have to pay for the item. And there are two other problems. One is that you don't get to post a long statement, by way of negative feedback. You only get about as much room as it takes to write this sentence. The other problem is that you open yourself up to receiving negative feedback as a buyer, as an act of retribution from the seller.

And it appears to be valid. I mean that there are too many different buyers with a high number of "positive feedback" comments of their own for them to have all been created falsely by him, in an effort to give a false impression of his own good name. A number of different people have bought the item, and have said they were happy with the transaction.

Scary, huh?

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

He has expanded the "disclaimer" in the new listing:

IT IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT THE MAIN BREAKER BE PLACED IN THE OFF POSITION BEFORE CONNECTING A GENERATOR TO THE HOUSE CIRCUITS. FAILURE TO DO THIS COULD RESULT IN THE SERIOUS INJURY OF A LINEMAN WORKING ON YOUR LINE OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSE. IF YOU THINK YOU MAY NOT REMEMBER TO TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKER TO YOUR HOUSE BEFORE USING THE GENERATOR CABLE, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS DOCUMENT. SAFETY OF OTHERS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Edit add:
Something we could do is swamp him with questions about his product. How can I use the dryer? But my generator is only 1500W? etc. :)

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

Nice! So what he is now saying is, "If you think you won't remember not to kill someone, then send me the $10 anyway, but don't use the device."

Re: Unbelievable E-bay listing

6 people bought it!

I can only hope (and pray) it was purchased by 6 EC's from here...and they live in Florida and are brining this guy's "information" to the proper authorities.

If purchased by HO's, with any luck, hopefully - they will have lost that BS "information" before they need to get the parts in time for next hurricane season.
