Any suggestions on what type of fixture to use on a 8' high soffit. Building built in the late 60's and currently has 10" square recessed cans.Owner says he's constantly replacing bulbs and when they are on they give little to no light. Structure does not allow for easily pulling new wires, was thinking of something that i could blank off the can and mount over the top. Thanks.

Use the existing can and retrofit it with LED's.

I just got some 25w led mogul base ( they make medium too ) lamps. $95 a peice from eco-smart.com. They replaced 50w hps, worked great. For only 95 dollars you can't go wrong. these were horizontally mounted and i think they were 10.25 in long. They do have smaller ones though, you will have to call them for sizes and pricing. We just bypassed the ballast, the lamps were self-ballast like a cfl. as long as they dont mind the 5000k color.

As long as you've sufficient cooling around the bulb they will be fine. Many LED bulbs have a problem with outdoor or enclosed fixture installation. Minor point; the LED's do not have ballast, but integral regulated power supply unless they are rated 12V or less. The $95 markup is ridicoulus.
