underground splice

Can you use a set screw type splice under ground or do you have to use a crimp type splice. which is better in your opinion? is one better for aluminum?

I use crimps for 250 MCM and smaller but use set screw for larger conductors. My crimper is only good for the smaller wires. I think the crimps are better but haven't had any call backs on the set screws either. Could be they called the guy down the road the second time though.

Have used both over the years and as long as it is sealed properly, you won't have any problems.
