Underground wiring

Have to get a circuit under a parking lot to feed power to a concrete monument 4 foot high by 6 foot wide.
Heres the magic question can I use pvc to go under and how deep do I have to go. It is a parking lot in front of a daycare center. I am trying hard not to cut the pavement and digging a trench to put in imc to the monument.
I was contemplateing hooking a jetting nozzle to 3/4 inch pvc and "JETTING" the pipe under the parking lot max distance is about 25 feet.
Any art numbers saying how deep or must use imc?

Re: Underground wiring

Jetting will not work for that distance. It works great for sidewalks and the like but the distance you are talking about is too long and you will remove too much material which will damage the load bearing region of the parking lot.

Now the bad news, you must have 24" of cover all the way across the parking lot regardless of the wiring method used. See 300.5 and the Table 300.5. :D

Re: Underground wiring

You can use a "hydrualic mole" to push the pipe that far but the pipe has to be rigid. I have driven rigid pipe that far with a slegde hammer but you have to be feeling lucky that day.If you can't dig a 10" ditch cut the pipe in half. We also weld the couplings so the pipe won't get damaged. We have driven as big as 3" rigid as far as 150' with the mole.

Re: Underground wiring

I have tied a garden hose to the end of a 5" piece of 1" polyethylene conduit and shoved it under a sidewalk by using the water pressure. :D

Re: Underground wiring

Our water dept uses a device called a mole, air powered with a pneumatic hammer inside, it will easily go 2 hundred feet, but you are never sure where it will end up. Directional drilling is a sure way, but perhaps more much more expensive.
Somes time the hard way is the easy way, IE sawcut and trench, esp if you fuss around with the jetting for more than 4 hours. Burial depths are in 300.5

Re: Underground wiring

Directional boring is great but it is expensive. The depth can be controlled and where you go is controlled as well. We use it a lot to replace cable in landscaped area to lower our impact on our customers. :D

Re: Underground wiring

Jetting is when you rework the fuel mixture on a carburetor. :D

Or it is when you run water through a pipe as you push it through the ground. The water washes the soil out of the way.

Re: Underground wiring

I-wire gets the big apple pie.
Jetting is used to put pillings down into the water for bulkheads as well as forceing imc underground to a certain place.

Re: Underground wiring

you need a fairly long run out trench to get depth and aim. i did it with one other guy doing the jetting with a hose. a valve cuts down on excess water and soil loss.

use a small nipple at the head for more jetting action and remove at arrival at aimed spot.

if you aim a long piece of rigid, you can come within inches.

slurry sand after piping done to fill cavity.

Re: Underground wiring

I thought jetting was blowin' this joint, yo.

Holy cow, that sounds like the absolute opposite of fun. You physically beat on the pipe, then??? Whoa.

Re: Underground wiring

Straps,
...not sure that this will help, but...
I used to have some literature from some company in Montana which makes a device called "Borezit" or something like that. It costs about $200 and consists of some device which uses 3/4" pipe. A earth drilling bit is attached to one end of the pipe and the other end to the device. Then you attach a heavy duty 1/2" drill, such as the dreaded HoleHawg, and a hose to the other end of the thing. It would seem to be a good fit for your situation.
Sorry it rained on the info and I had to throw the pulp away.

Re: Underground wiring

I'm glad you found the reference. I couldn't.
Maybe, if you get one, you could post a review.

Re: Underground wiring

If your feeling lucky Cut a hole in the middle of the parking lot big enough to dig 2' and beat pipes in from both sides and hope to meet in the middle. I worked for a crazy, cheap old %^*(%$? and he would do anything not to rent equipment.
This is something he would of attempted.

Edited to remove an offensive word. Charlie
