can a grounding type receptacle be used to replace an ungrounded type as long as it is gfci protected and marked gfci protected -no equip ground?

Under the NEC yes you can.

Check out 406.3(D)(3).

However 250.114 is also worth a look to see all the items you will not be able to plug in to that ungrounded receptacle.

Back in 1959 when I was a senior in high school, I had several wonderful senior moments.
