Don't think this is the right forum but I'll try. I own a 2 family house and me and my girlfriend live upstairs. She like to use a little tiny electric space heater in the bedroom when she sleeps. I was wondering now that the colder weather is coming how can I determine if ti would be a cheaper to use the space heater when we go to sleep only as opposed to turning on the heat( there are separate zones up & down). We use gas not oil.

You are asking a difficult question. However, you can cut through the hype of who has the less expensive heat by asking both the electric company and the gas company what the cost is for supplying a therm of heat (this is an absolute figure). In the case of a resistance electric heater, the efficiency is 100%. I don't have a clue about your gas heat. Also consider the area being heated. Normally, and electric heater is heating just one room while a gas furnace is heating several rooms. You will have to do some investigating before coming up with an answer that is suitable. It is my guess that the single electric heater is going to be less expensive because it is heating such a small space. :smile:
 
IMO you'll never heat better with electricity than gas if you live in the Northeast. Your method would save money if you didn't mind the unheated portion of the house being very clod in the dead of winter.
 
Charlie, that's what I said.........I was heating just one room. Since it is just us two when we go to bed we would leave the heat off and heat just the bedroom( not that big) with the space heater. Yes I know the rest of the house would be cold. Oh right above us is the attic which has No insulation. I am a first time home owner( about 6 months) but I was told I should get insulation up there.
