Was on a job today standard branch circuit receptacles ground up, IG's ground down. DIFFERENT.
That makes at least a little bit of sense... for ready identification of special receptacles. Some guys will flip the switched receptacle in a room, for that same reason.

Yeah, I noticed that was/is the preferred method of tract builders out west. When I first visited there I couldn't figure out why one receptacle in each bedroom was "upside down." It makes sense though.

Some contractors around here do half switched rec. ground up and the others ground down so we can see witch one is switched with out pulling the rec out of the wall.

dumbest thing i've ever heard of... in residential anyway.

What? Flipping the switched outlet? It sure makes it easier to find and/or identify.... all you need to do is look at it. No pulling it out of the wall, no tester, no going to try turning a switch on.

Yep. looks like crap too... ;)

"Hey bob, why is that receptacle installed upside down"? "Got me, been like that since I bought the place" Bwaaaahhhh.....

Maybe your customers are too picky. I've never heard any of mine complain. In fact, some have commented about how easy it will be for them to remember which recep to plug their Christmas tree into.

To be honest, I cant tell you the last time I did a switched receptacle. But if someone is too dumb to remember where they put their christmas tree every year then do what you have to do... ;) I'm not against what you do, I just dont see the point.

Not sure how many service calls I refused to go to by saying,
Look it may not be worth my time to drive there, and you'll be really ticked if I go there and find this - does that outlet that does not work look like it is upside down in comparison to the others? Is there a switch by the door that you never knew what it did?
Half the time you "OHHhhhhh! Thats what that switch is for...." in the backround.... Some people have told me they lived in the house for 20 years, and never had a clue...

Back to identifying IG - that little green triangle or dot is not enough?

I prefer split-wiring every receptacle in a room than switching one.

That's a lot of three-wire!

We do the flipped receptacle in resi work too. On final walk through, "The upside down is your half-switched plug/outlet."
