Upgrading generator

Hospital, if we want to replace existing generator by a larger one, what procedure should we follow? I know that nfpa-99 requires a backup & permanent, onsite generator for emergency system in hospital all the time.

Should we rent a temporary generator to backup before removing existing EG and add new one so emergency power won't be interrupted just in case the building loses normal utility power? Thank you!

Unless your replacement can be installed, started and tested before the final change over, I would strongly recommend a temp. If something weird happens and the hospital needs generator and it is not available, it will not be worth what the temp is going to cost you.

Have you thought about leaving the existing and adding additional to give redundancy? Check with Generac on their paralleling systems and options. Quite nice set-up they have going.
