UPS on Generator

Gen vs UPS load

Gen vs UPS load

The WHY may have to do with the harmonic distortion that is reflected back to the generator controls, i.e. voltage regulator, governor, synchronizer, etc.
These devices have a certain amount of filtering but their limits can be exceeded and this may cause weird generator voltage and frequency output to the load.

Then again, this is the holidays and I am feeling the spirits :D:grin::rolleyes:

Has anyone heard that only a certain percentage of a standby generators load can be UPS's? If so could you please explain?

Joe

As it is mentioned in another reply it is tha harmonic distortion that drives the genny VR nuts. It does not necessarily has to do with the size of the generator but rather the VR compatibility. Always have the genny manufacuter size the genrator withe all the load information and specific UPS model on hand.

The other issue is the input and bypass V&F tolerance and to what values are those adjusted. Old UPS's were quite limited and would not accept the genny normal voltage swing, harmonics or not.

Unfortunately the generator is existing to the building and the company is updating the UPS's and expanding. It sounds like there should have been a more concentrated effort in terms of engineering this project to coordinate the issues mentioned in this post and the link to the earlier post on this same topic. Sometimes they think because we are the installing electrician on site we can perform miracles.
