I've never dealt with UPS's, but make an assumption that they are batteries that go through an inverter that kicks in to feed a load that is critical to the customer. The UPS will kick in on no voltage or low voltage.

If that assumption is correct, here is the question. At what low voltage (typically, or range) does the UPS kick in?

each manufacturer's specs are different and like anything else, you get what you pay for!!! the faster the transfer the more expensive the ups will be as well as the response voltage. some ups loads may not be dependent on maintaining a constant high voltage and can live with the cheaper units. we have had units that are adjustible or programable also.................

there are also online UPS's that continuously run off the batteries and the batteries are continuously charging. These are considerably more expensive and inefficient but the transfer time is zero if that matters.
