can anyone tell me what is a static input on a ups system. I dont recall what this means. I am reading the manual that came with it but it is not explaing if you need it. This is a 50 kva system feed 208v output 208v . we have two conduits can for line and load but I am not sure why there is a spot for a static bypass.
Is a static transfer switch an option or required in the instatation of most large ups systems?

In a UPS the Static Switch is an very fast electronic transfer switch.

A UPS either has a single source split to feed the UPS and bypass or two sources one for the UPS input and one for the bypass.

When the UPS fails for any reason the static transfer switch transfers the load from the UPS to the alternate source the bypass, very fast transfoer wih no interruption to the critical load. Additionally during service the UPS can be put on Static bypass, that is the critical load is fed from the alternate source.

This alternate source is unprotected so the critical load is at the mercy of the utility or generator, though there are UPS schemes with a UPS for the bypass source.
