Or I could even downsize my wire to my original #10 if I just install 20 amp, 240 v subpanel. (customer wants two circuits,, one for gate opener, one for outlets for lighting) Am I off base, or crazy ?

If you're running two circuits to the same building, you would have to run a 240V circuit to a subpanel anyway. Unless the circuit is a MWBC, you can't run more that one circuit to a separate building.
The 240V would definitely help with VD as well

It's two circuits to the end of a driveway, by the county road.
If the big load is the motorized gate, look for one that works with 240 input. Your %VD improves by a factor of 4. (120V, 20A sounds like a pretty big motor for a gate.) Your VD should be based on the actual load, not the OCPD size.
Or look for a DC operated gate with a battery that can be recharged at a much lower power consumption.
