The garage that is detached may be viewed as a non dwelling building. I think it is a bogus call but I guess it can be cited as the code is written today.

A detached garage, shed, dog house, boathouse, none of those are dwelling units, it is not a 'bogus call' it is how the code is written.

I fully support a change for the code to include accessory structures.

Our inspectors let us use NM cable in unfinished/finished attached residential garages and for a while made us install MC cable or pipe in unfinished detached residential garages, that ran for about a month or so then said we can now run NM cable in all residential garages (attached/detached/unfinshed or finished) and all commercial garages will have no NM.

Classifying a garage as a damp location might depend on whether the floor is concrete or dirt (i have seen dirt in Ohio).

I tried to get NMC in the Atlanta area, and no one seems to have it or even recognize it exists. As an aside, one of my main suppliers, City Electric, didn't even know 12-2-2 (or 12-4) existed.
