"Hi:
I have a 400 amp u/g service (dual sweetbriers 4/0-4/0-2/0 al) being brought into
a shop in conduit. The service terminates at the utility provided CL320 meter base.
The 400 amp service will be split 200 to the shop and 200 to the residence. The
building inspector wanted a 400 amp breaker installed inside the building back-to-back
with the meter base. Reason being, that the 400 amp feed is going to a generator
transfer switch before going to the shop and residence MB load centers. The 400
amp breaker box and the transfer switch are approx 40' apart. Between the 400
amp breaker box and the transfer switch is 2 1/2" sch 40 pvc.
My question is:
1. Can the 400 amp breaker box be fed with the same USE Al sweetbrier used in the
U/G feed and
2. Can the residential feed out of the transfer switch be fed with the 4/0-4/0-2/0
Al sweetbrier as well? All the interior wiring is in either factory metal boxes
supplied with the transfer switch and the 400 amp breaker. All the wiring to the
shop MB load center as well as the residencial MB load center are in sch 40 as well.
The residental feed will run inside the shop for approx 45' before exiting (in
sch 40 & 80) to U/G feed the residence. Does NEC 338.12B1 prohibit this use?
It seems to be that it's intent is to prohibit "unprotected" USE cable
from being strewn about (interior wiring) after the meter base. All this wiring
is totally enclosed in sch 40.
Your thoughts?
Thanks,
Ryan"
