USE used inside building

I have a customer that ran his own wire from an outside disconnect to a panel inside a building (it is a restaurant-bar), but he used USE cable.

My interpretation of the code is that USE is not permitted to be run inside a premises, because it is not required to be flame retardant, am I correct?

Can he use the USE if he puts it in conduit?
He has two runs of it to two panels, I think one run is 40 feet and the other is 50 feet.

Are owners allowed to do their own electrical installations in commercial bldg's in this area?

See Article 338 for the specifics.

Yes. He is outside the city limits, where there are no inspectors or regulations on who can do what.

Howelloregon, if you have access to the 02 NEC as I said before go to article 338 which will take you to 334 (NM).

Basically it can be installed anywhere NM can be used, but there are restrictions to where NM can be run in commercial buildings. (334.12)

Check out Art. 338.10(B)(4), I think this will answer your question about USE Cable entering a building.

Errata
338.10(B)(4)(b): Revise second paragraph to read:
"Type USE cable shall be installed outside in accordance with the provisions of Article 340. Where Type USE cable emerges from the ground at terminations, it shall be protected in accordance with 300.5(D). Multiconductor service entrance cable shall be permitted to be installed as messenger-supported wiring in accordance with Articles 225 and 396."

This errata has deleted the sentence, "The length of the cable extending indoors to the first termination box shall not exceed 1.8m(6 ft)."

310.3 allows it.It is a recognized wire in these enviorments comply with applicable articles 300.4 d etc.All is good to go.......

Yes, if it stays outside. No, if the circuit goes inside the building. Please see 338.10(B)(4)(b) that I copied above from the errata. :D

Ingnore my post above, I was not paying attention, and where I referenced it could be installed where NM could be used, would only pertain to SE not USE :eek:
