Is it legal to use 100 amp sub-feed cable in an industrial setting without running it in conduit? It will be hung approx. 10 feet high, and run down an access hallway to the womens locker room. It is not possible for any type of motorized equipment to enter this hallway, and will not be over a drop ceiling, nor will it be near any water.

Maybe, it would depend on the construction type of the building.

That aside if you must go cable I strongly suggest steel jacketed MC cable.

The rules for SE are contained in Article 338, if you look at 338.10(B)(4) it basically tells us if we use it for branch circuits and feeders we must follow the rules of NM Article 334.

In 334 we find it can be used in homes and Other structures permitted to be of Types III, IV, and V construction.

So you need to find out if your building is Types III, IV, or V construction.

I've used aluminum SER cable in 1 story factories. In a factory the runway conductors for a bridge crane ARE a form of open wiring on insulators.

In fact, you can still run open wiring on insulators in the ceiling of most factories as a cheap alternative to busway. Just remember to run an equipment grounding wire with it as you are NOT allowed to use the building steel as a ground bus.
