One of the gentlemen who serves on the Utah chapter of IAEI board of directors with me is named Gaylen Rogers. He is on the code making panel for the cable wiring method articles. He told me today at our board meeting that, contrary to popular belief, the "uses permitted" sections will remain in the 2005 NEC. He said the motion to delete them was running smoothly, but at the comments stage it was overturned by a very close vote.

Re: Uses permitted

I'd like to see them extracted and put into table form so all methods can be quickly cross referenced and compared.

-Method : Wet | Dry | plaster embed | blah | blah

Re: Uses permitted

Tony, while I think your idea is a good one, I would rather see the "uses permitted" section gone altogether. For the most part, the NEC is a restrictive or mandatory document, not a permissive document. With the uses permitted section gone, one could assume that if it is not restricted by the uses not permitted section than it is permitted.

Re: Uses permitted

I'd take the not permitted in a similar table format. It would make spec'ing job materiels easier to be able to look at one page, whip your finger down a column and see if what you thought you might use was really allowed. That might be a 10 page fold out chart though :D

For an inspector, a table format should make this stuff a handier field and plan review reference tool. Flipping pages back and forth constantly is a PITA ;)

Re: Uses permitted

Ryan, I agree with you.

But, I could see tony's idea put to use with a 'uses not permitted' chart for quick reference.

Ah, forget it. The book is perfect.

Re: Uses permitted

This here book ain't never gonna be purfect nohow! That is why it is opened up for proposals every three years. Multiple proposals on the same thing will always get the panels attention. Also, multiple comments on the same panel action will always get the panels attention.

What I am saying is get involved in the Code making process! You may be surprised how much you can do to change the Code. :D

BTW, the deadline for proposals for the 2008 NEC will be around the first Friday in October of 2005. They will start accepting proposals after the 2005 Code is issued in August or September of this year.

Charlie,
BTW, the deadline for proposals for the 2008 NEC will be around the first Friday in October of 2005.
Is that a change for the 2008 cycle? It was November 5, 1999 for the 02 code and November 1, 2002 for the 05 code.

Fixed the quote formatting.
