What are the hazards of using a 240 v photo eye to run a 277 v HID lighting circuit contactor?

If it is only rated 240v then you may burn out the photocell however are you sure it is not rated for both 240/277

I'd be surprised if it isnt rated for 277V; even this $7 photocell is 208/240/277:

Are you talking about running the photocell at 240V to control a contactor for a 277V circuit? Probably no hazard there.
