I am looking for the any information on using a dedicated disconnect box as raceway to feed another disconnect box that is used for overhead cranes. I believe that it should be feed from either a dedicated run of conduit or from a separate raceway. As it stands now 480vac comes into one box and goes through to the next. when you tag out one box the power to the other is still on and there is the posiblity of live voltage being present. is this a NEC code violation?

No, not an NEC violation as long as you meet 312.8.

This is no different than if you LOTO a breaker in a panel. There is still voltage present inside the panel but that does not make it unsafe. Also, when you LOTO a disconnect there is still voltage present on the line side of the terminals.
