Does a customer owned utility pole need lightning protection?
What I came across yesterday was a 100 amp residential service in wich the lateral was over a driveway and attached to the customers pole from the street. It would appear the original install of the pole was for clearence issues for the driveway. The service enters a 1 story "carport" of sorts(the pole is @ 1 foot away from the structure) to the disco and then in conduit thru the breeze way to the sub panel. The odd thing is that there is a lightning spike on top of the pole with stranded aluminum lightning cable wich appears to have been cut @ 8 feet above the ground on pupose. The stranded cable is also attached to the service nuetral at the top of the pole. The poco was out recently because the customer (as always) thought the upper cable in need of replacement was thier responsibility. I'm wondering if the poco cut this off "their" stuff and why?? Any thoughts on this guys??
Thanks,Bob
