Utility upgrade from 4.16kv to 13.8kv.

If only I had done google street view in the first place, I would have answered my own question. :slaphead: Looks like the pump station has a 480 volt delta secondary. Now I see why they didn't want to upgrade this, that would have necessitated a switch gear change at the station.

I see 5kv insulators on portions of that line in between the pump house and step down, so that segment is certainly not ready for an upgrade.


Question for posters: How does your POCO go about asking a customer to go from a delta to a wye service? Or do they just wait for the customer to start the process?

Right, they would need to change every insulator and probably a few poles before they could go to 13.8kv. I see why they hung the 13.8 to 4.16 step downs now. :p

As for your second question, they will allow an old service to remain and have the delta transformers on hand if one gives up the ghost. But if you need to upgrade or modify it in any way, then it's almost a guaranteed upgrade to wye.

They could have done the line in advance and converted all at once, but doing it all at once is often impractical.
 
Not sure what you mean by this. The 3-phase goes into the neighborhood solely for this pump station, as the pump station in the back end of the lowest part of this cluster of houses. The 3-phase serves no other loads other than the regular 120/240 along the way. This is common where I live, and probably everywhere else in the country. Whenever I see 3-phase heading into an area that I know is all residential, I know there is a pump station at the end of it.

The fact that 3 ph is run in a residential area means capacity was not the issue

and switch out all the residential xfmrs
how many homes on the spur?

most residential areas around here are 1 ph
if I put a pump station in we used vfd's to go 3 ph
to run 3 ph 1/2 mile the utility would want 75-100k plus
then again most pumps were 100 HP or less
for larger we sometimes had to bite the bullet
our utility got 10k per pole to extend 3 ph

what kva are the 13.8:4.16 xfmrs?

They could simply put a delta bank back in.

Not required to go to wye. The customer can have either one they want.
 
As mentioned before, the municipal pump motors might be 4,160v. Also around here the electrical utilities typically don't replace more than they have to and they will replace when broken.

Probably less than 50, all small homes built no later than the 1960's and most have gas or oil heat. Electric heat is uncommon (high rates) and central air is uncommon too. Most everyone in my neighborhood uses window A/C's.

It's good all this infrastructure for the pump stations was built decades ago because that's around what it would cost here too.
