What do you do when you cut the opening for your fixture old-work box and find a PVC drain vent 1/2" behind the drywall?

I got tired of that one a long time ago.

That's fine, now imagine the fixture location being about 18" of the vanity and finding your wire. That house was the last straw for loops/no fixture location. The GC agreed with me when we had to cut out huge chunks of rock to get the wires. (Thankfully the full size mirror took care of most patch work problems.) One of the first things I tell HO on walk-thru is that they have until rough inspection to pick a location for the lights. I don't think it is too much to ask.

Edited for clarity.

Absolutely, as well as the fixtures themselves.

Looping the wire may work in some situations but beware. If your vanity is on an exterior wall, then you could be in trouble. Around here they are using that blown in hard foam insulation. Once your wires get in that you are in for lots of hassels.

The lighting consultant wants me to leave wires for the exterior in the wall on this 3 million dollar home. I told him absolutely not. They are using that hard foam insulation and he better make the decision or I will.

No problem. If you look close, the bottom of the loops are about 12" above the vanity.

Think of the loop of wire you would have in this wall-- half a roll.

With a bathroom like that, you think the HO is going to complain about another $50 for wire?

I think Allied Molding should make an old work pancake for these situations, maybe that is how I will make my millions.

And while you're at it, would you please invent an old work bathroom exhaust fan?

That's great. I hope it keeps working for you. It does allow for more versatility. I just don't have too many rules, but a fixed location at rough-in is one of 'em. In the one case I mentioned, your left hand loop never would have been found through a 3 1/2" hole. Never before or sense have I had to mount fixtures that low, but as we all know, all it takes is once.

Edit to add: BTW, I did a house a year or so ago with a similar vanity and almost gave myself a hernia trying to move the giant soap dish out of the way so I could hang the light fixture.  Thankfully I can laugh about a silly thought instead of cry over an expensive mistake. :)

I have retro-fit many bath fans. I even did the ducting. It's not that hard.
