On a residential kitchen vent hood that is 120V and has a light and a small fan motor what does the code require as far as it being cord and plug connected or hard wired? Also if you installed a receptacle above the vent hood in a cabinet what does the code say about running an appliance cord through the piece of wood between the vent hood and the cabinet shelf? I have seen vent hoods installed both ways and never really gave it much thought until today. Can the vent hood be placed on 1 of the small appliance branch circuits?

Check out 210.19 (3) and 422.16(4)(5) in particular. when you put these 2 together, I believe if its 'cord and plug' connected then it must have its own circuit. At least thats what I would do.

No to on the sabc.210.52 (B)(2)

Look @ Art,422.16(B)(4) - If the range hood is listed as to be cord & plug connected your fine but check the listing. As far as being on the small appliance circuit look @ Art,210.5(B)(2) - The range hood is not one of the things that are listed to be allowed on the small appliance circuit.

So you guys are hard wiring them? I had a customer want one cord and plug connected and now that I think about it, I have never seen one cord and plug connected. They have all been hard wired.

Are range hoods supplied by cord & plug common somewhere in this country? I've never seen it. They're not exactly "portable" either.

Yes, they are microwave/rangehood combinations.

All microwaves designed to be mounted above a range are dual listed as microwaves and as rangehoods, that is the reason that 422.16(B)(4) is in the code. It would be tough to require all microwaves to be on an individual branch circuit, but for cord and plug connected rangehoods (Really above the range microwaves) is much easier to require.

I'm with you. I have never seen one that was cord and plug connected.

I know the inspector that got this into the code but I really think it is bogus. Why not require all range hoods to be on an individual circuit for the same reasoning as a recep. aboved the hood. It is just as easy to convert a hood that is direct wired and make it a recep. for a range hood.

I think they should have gone further with that requirement but I would allow the gas range recep. on the circuit also. If I ever think about again I will make a proposal. :D

That proposal has already been made for the 2011 cycle. It seems that a couple of people submitted this code change. I think it is a good proposal, there is noting worse than making an electrician remove the receptacle for the gas range from the microwave/rangehood circuit and put it on another circuit. The exception would look like exception No 2. to 210.52(B)(2).

Thanks Chris, now will that be retroactive to all the hoods I have already wired like that. :D

Yep, it will include a statement to the effect "this exception shall be retroactive for all of the hoods that Dennis has wired ":D
Chris

I like that. I would much rather have my name in the NEC than to go to the post office and see my name and picture all over the place.:D
