Hello guys and gals.

I notice sometimes the siding guys will put up jblocks for my rec. and fixtures that have threaded holes that I can use to mount them too. Then sometimes they do not have the threaded holes.

I have been installing a WP single gang surfacemount box to opening in Jblock and I think it looks like crap and sticks out too far.

I have seen other electricians just mount rec and light with drywall screws directly to vinyl and move on. I think this is poor workmanship.

What do you guys do when you come back to finish and there are no threaded holes to mount devices too (just a Jblock)?

I have seen the products from arlington but the owner wants them to be same color as vinyl.

Thanks for replys.

What color is the vinyl?

If the siding block installed does not have a built-in junction box I install an octagon metal box and cut the vinyl to accommodate my box. Or, I put a piece of 1X3 strapping and use a pancake box. Depends on what kind of fixtures I'm installing.

As I see it, a box is required:
300.15 Boxes, Conduit Bodies, or Fittings ? Where Required. See related UL A box shall be installed at each outlet and switch point for concealed knob-and-tube wiring.

Fittings and connectors shall be used only with the specific wiring methods for which they are designed and listed.

Where the wiring method is conduit, tubing, Type AC cable, Type MC cable, Type MI cable, nonmetallic-sheathed cable, or other cables, a box or conduit body shall be installed at each conductor splice point, outlet point, switch point, junction point, termination point, or pull point, unless otherwise permitted in 300.15(A) through (M).
