Bob5 ,you asked for definition and i gave it to you
5 : a material layer enclosing space <the wall of a container>

would a cabinet not seperate 1 room area from another ?Does an island not seperate kitchen from living room.
Nothing says what walls must be made from or thickness
walls can be made from brick, drywall ,plastic, etc.,or wood

What was the intent of nec not wanting cords thru holes ?

I do think most inspectors would allow this for the microwave and even the DW but whe wasnt this light simply wired in directly ?

The microwave range hood has to pass thru a cabinet in order to plug it in. Some dishwashers come with cord and plug and need a receptacle mounted in the adjacent cabinet by the manufacturers specs. The cord must pass thru a cabinet. No way around it.

I guess most entertainment centers and computer cabinets would be illegal since they are designed for wires to extend through holes provided in them. ;)

Also, in many offices cords pass through gromets in desk tops to receptacles below.

I also suggested checking the building code as I am willing to bet they have a definition of wall.

If you want to go through life thinking the side of a cabinet is a wall thats cool.

Me ... I like to apply a little more commonsense. :D

Just cause it happens does not make it legal. The entertainment center is just what nec was trying to stop.Owner will plug in a power strip and nobody will see the plug for years.I am sitting at my desk that has holes for all the cords.Calling the nec cops now and turning myself in,see you all in 20 years.

As do most, but it's the inspector that comes out and has a different oppinion of the install. I think of one thing they may fall back on is in 210.52(2)

(2) Wall Space. As used in this section, a wall space shall include the following:
(1) Any space 600 mm (2 ft) or more in width (including space measured around corners) and unbroken along the floor line by doorways, fireplaces, and similar openings
(2) The space occupied by fixed panels in exterior walls, excluding sliding panels
(3) The space afforded by fixed room dividers such as freestanding bar-type counters or railings

I could see an inspector saying," if a bar counter is considered wall space in this section ,then it is wall."

I also quetion if that light is listed for use over a sink? Many of them are lable "not for use over sink or cook top".

IMO The section you quoted just reaffirms that normally a counter is not a wall. Notice that section says As used in this section

The CMP is saying that regardless of a counter not being a 'wall' for the purposes of this particular code section it will be called one.
