I have a portable generator that I use for emergency backup wired into my breaker panel.

I would like to install two meters into my breaker panel cover that will monitor voltage, Hz and watts for L1 and L2 from the generator. See attached photo of proposed location.

My question is if I mount the meters in the proposed location will I be violating any codes?

Any information/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all.

I hesitate to respond, and I am not going to answer your question.

You indicate that you manage an electrical department. What does that mean? The wording of the thread post does not look like you are an electrical engineer or electrician.

Why do you want to have permanent meters in the main panel to measure voltage, power, and frequency?

I have a portable generator and have never bothered to make these measurements on a continuous basis. But if I wanted to I would use a separate JIC box.

I do have a TED system in the main panel to monitor voltage, and power. There are many things I don't like about the TED system, but I can get useful information, but not frequency.

When I run my portable generator it stalls if I overload it. No big problem. Remove the overload and restart. Don't overload it. Mine is a 5 kW HONDA. Speed control is good enough that frequency is OK. I don't need and can not get real good frequency control. My generator use is for emergency. When an electric motor starts you can hear the generator slowdown during motor start, and therefore frequency drops.

That's what I was thinking. How to remove panel cover with hard wired meters even with some sore to plug in device such as used with light ballast.

Be easier just to mount meters in sperate box and leave hard wired.
